George Washington's Carrot Tea Cake (1783, United States)


The American Revolutionary War is officially over and in Fraunces Tavern in Manhattan, George Washington and his soldiers are enjoying this frugal, easy to make, delicious carrot cake recipe.

Ingredients: (Serves four)

2 large/3 small carrots
2 cups of flour
1 tbsp of cinnamon
2 tsps of baking soda
1 tsp of salt
3/4 cup of rapeseed oil
1/2 cup of sugar
4 eggs
Butter for the baking dish
Icing sugar (optional) 

  1. Grate the carrots and preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius. Butter a baking dish with a brush.
  2. In a bowl, put flour,  cinnamon, baking soda and salt, then mix.
  3. In another bowl, pour the oil and sugar. Then on top, break the eggs, add the carrots and mix. Once a uniform liquid, add the flour and mix.
  4. Pour into the baking dish and put it in the oven for about thirty minutes or until brown. Top with icing sugar and serve!
